It gives the merit to the boy to perform the Sandhyavandhanam and resort to chanting the chief mantra, the highly powerful one – The Gayathri Mantra and lead a life of disciplined and righteousness one.

‘Upanayanam’ or sacred thread ceremony is done for the high classes of the Indian society i.e. Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas. The first and ideal step to be recognized as a Brahmin is the Upanayanam ceremony. This makes a Brahmin boy to enter into Brahmacharya avastha. It can be said as the transference of spiritual knowledge. Though the children of today enter the school at a very tender age, yet the full functioning of the brain starts only from the age of five. In order to prove to the family and near and dear ones that a child has developed well in intelligence and to gain a further expansion of the brain, a very special function is conducted religiously, ritualistically and in a grand manner for a male child.

This function is called Upanayanam – A Sacred Thread Ceremony is celebrated. The thin consecrated sacred thread has three strands. One each for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (Tamas ,sattwa, rajas), while others also interpret it as Maa Parvati ( Goddess of strength ), Maa Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) & Maa Saraswati (Goddess of knowledge). The ceremony is done usually in a chathram or mandapam , presided by the priest and the father of the boy in particular . The various poojas imploring the various gods and forces of nature are done and finally when the apt time is reached, the father reveals the Gayathri mantra in the ears of the boy secretly when a silk cloth covers them. This marks the boy being entitled for chanting the mantra.

The boy initially wears a gold and silver thread along with the thin three threads over his shoulder to his stomach. People gathered bless the boy for his escalation to the next phases of his life and shower gifts. The other importance of Upanayanam in step by step are  Uthakashanthi, Naandhimukha ceremony, Aajyabhaagaantha homam, Yagnopaveetha Dharanam, Kumarabhojanam, Brammopadesam, Soorya Dharshan, Bhikshakaranam, Abhivathanam.

Priests will perform this ceremony in an auspicious day. This ceremony is generally regarded as an asset of a Brahmin boy. It is responsibility of each and every parent to conduct this ceremony at right time. So avail our service and make this important ceremony more sacred and blessed one!

It gives the merit to the boy to perform the Sandhyavandhanam and resort to chanting the chief mantra, the highly powerful one – The Gayathri Mantra and lead a life of disciplined and righteousness one. The strands of the thread have different meaning depending on the communities. The sacred thread has 3 strands. Only one is worn when the person is bachelor, a married one wears two making it 6 strands and if the married has fathered a child he wears three making it 9 strands. It also symbolizes the 3 debts one must never forget- One to our teacher or guru, one to our parents or ancestors and one to the sages or rishis.

The ceremony makes one to understand the importance and value to born as a Brahmin. He is the one who is known to have the thorough knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads. It is believed a Brahmin is to be born again during Upanayanam ceremony. Upanayanam ceremony is mainly done to wear Yagnopavitam on body which reminds a Brahmachari to lead a life with purity in thought, mind and body.
